Minister Maya acquitted in corruption case
The High Court on Monday has acquitted Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya from a graft case in which he had been sentenced to 13 years in jail.
Meanwhile, the court scrapped the lower court verdict that had convicted and awarded punishment to the minister.

An HC bench comprising of Justice Md Nazrul Isalm Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam pronounced the verdict today, responding to an appeal filed by Maya challenging the lower court judgment.
The bench acquitted Maya as the Anti-corruption Commission could not prove the allegations against the minister, said ACC lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan.
On June 13, 2007, the ACC filed the case against the Awami League leader with Sutrapur Police Station for amassing illegal wealth beyond a reasonable doubt.
On February 14, 2008, a trial court convicted and sentenced him to 13 years in jail, fined him Tk 5 crore and ordered confiscation of about Tk 6 crore of his “ill-gotten” wealth.
On May 25, 2009, Maya filed an appeal with the HC, which acquitted him on October 27, 2010.
The ACC filed the leave to appeal petition with the SC challenging the HC verdict in 2011.
