Rest in Peace Birangana Rama Chowdhury
The Liberation War heroine Birangana Rama Chowdhury died in the early hours of Monday. She has been laid to rest with state honour at her birthplace, Popadia village in Chittagong’s Boalkhaliupazila.
Instead of cremating, the family members decided to bury the 1971 Liberation War heroine complying with her last wish on Monday afternoon.

People from all walks of life paid their last respect when her mortal remains reached Popadia around 2:30pm.
Earlier, her body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar in Chittagong city where she was presented a guard of honour as a freedom fighter.
Like many people, eminent writer and freedom fighter Begum MustariShafi paid her last respect to Rama Chowdhury there.

"Rama Chowdhury struggled throughout her life. She refused to accept donations from anyone. She was a courageous woman. She led her life by selling her own books. Her contribution to the society is beyond measure," Mustari said.
Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Abdul Mannan, Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Amena Begum, Habibur Rahman, acting deputy commissioner of the district, leaders of both Awami League and BNP and other political parties and different social and cultural organizations, among others, paid tribute to Rama Chowdhury at the Shaheed Minar.
Rama Chowdhury, 77, died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 4:10am on Monday, her son Jahar Lal Chowdhury had told the Dhaka Tribune earlier.
He said: " My mother had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since January 17 for different old-age-related complications including diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and hypertension.”
Jahar added that she was put on life support at 11:30 p.m. Sunday when her condition deteriorated.
Born in 1941, Rama obtained her master’s degree in Bengali literature from Dhaka University in 1961. She authored 19 books throughout her lifetime.

She lost her husband and two other children during the Liberation War.
On May 13, 1971, the occupying Pakistani army tortured and violated her. They also torched her house at Popadia.
Out of grief and respect for the freedom fighters, Rama walked barefooted from 1972.
Though she momentarily stopped doing so due to a health condition, she resumed the practice on December 16, 1998, when her youngest son was killed in a road accident—and never stopped the practice afterwards.
