Veterinary medicine is a prestigious profession worldwide. World Veterinary Day is celebrated to recognise the crucial work of veterinarians all over the world since the year 2000 by the World Veterinary Association (WVA). This special day is celebrated on the last Saturday of April across the world. Just like every year, this year "World Veterinary Day" is going to be celebrated with the motto "Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers." The young students of the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at Gono Bishwabidalay expressed their thoughts concerning this special day.

"Veterinarians are the assets of the world."

To build a better nation, veterinarians are essential. They ensure pure and nutritious food for us. Every year, we need around 87 million metric tonnes of eggs, which are produced by farmers. Proper guidelines and medical support help them produce those eggs. Not only eggs, but they also provide us with fresh milk, meat, and other products as well. The community of veterinarians has long worked tirelessly for the welfare of humans. Veterinarians face various obstacles and workplace pressures, including overwork and emotional stress from dealing with sick or injured animals, which can deeply affect their professional and personal lives. It should be made sure that there are no hazards for the veterinary profession. All veterinarians are making a huge impact on our lives.

"Hey humans, we're in trouble!"

By taking care of animals, vets are contributing to animal health, disease control, and maintaining ecological balance. From livestock to companions, vets are essential for ensuring the treatment and well-being of animals. As a human being, everybody has some responsibilities towards animals. But here we are with a different approach. We, the veterinarians, play a crucial role in disease prevention, treatment, and public health, as well as in promoting animal welfare and the human-animal bond. We are the doctors for those creatures of God who can't express their feelings and who try but can't say, "Hey humans, we're in trouble!". To give them a better life, we work 24 hours a day. Also, this work can contribute to physical, mental, and social well-being. However, sometimes these activities remain invisible to society. Also considered a "thankless job.” But at the end of the day, our contribution to animal health is very clear, as veterinarians provide extensive medical care and work to ensure the safety of domestic animals, even stray and wild animals. Veterinary Day plays a vital role in reminding us of the importance, responsibilities, and duties of this sector. May this day bring happiness and more awareness to the world by ensuring animal health care.

“It helps to prevent disease.“

70% of the world's disease-causing organisms are animals. Wild animals are the main cause of epidemics in the world. In the past, there were records of millions of deaths due to different flus. Swine flu, Ebola, Mars, Sars, and now COVID-19. Animals are the source of all these major epidemics. Here, veterinarians play a crucial role in ensuring the health and well-being of animals, which in turn impacts human health and environmental sustainability. They diagnose and treat illnesses, prevent the spread of diseases, conduct research, promote animal welfare, and contribute to public health efforts through disease surveillance and control. Yet, amidst their noble endeavours, veterinarians face numerous challenges, including long hours, emotional strain, and limited resources. On World Veterinary Day, let us not only express our gratitude but also advocate for better support systems and resources to enable them to continue their vital work effectively.

“Well-being between man and animal”

World Veterinary Day is dedicated to highlighting the contributions of veterinarians to the health of animals and humans, as well as the environment. It’s a day to honour their dedication, compassion, and expertise in caring for animals. Veterinarians play a crucial role in ensuring the welfare of animals in a variety of settings, including farms, zoos, and wildlife habitats. Veterinarians are not just healers; they are guardians of the bond between humans and animals. From beloved pets to vital livestock, their expertise ensures the well-being of countless creatures. Beyond treating illnesses and injuries, they work tirelessly to prevent diseases through vaccinations, promote responsible pet ownership, and advance animal welfare initiatives. On this World Veterinary Day, let's express our gratitude to veterinarians worldwide for their unwavering commitment to the well-being of animals and the planet. Their dedication is truly deserving of recognition and appreciation, not just today but every day.
